Best Graduate Student

Winner – Ms. Pooja Premnath

Ms. Pooja Premnath completed B.E in Computer Engineering from Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering, Chennai. Throughout her undergraduate and early research experiences, she tried to work on problems where computational methods can make a clear difference in healthcare. As part of the India AI Fellowship with MeitY, Government of India, she built a text-to-SQL system to help digitize rural medical records in South India, where clinicians often work with handwritten notes in local languages. At the University of Alberta and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute, she worked on ECG models that combined clinical signals with explainability methods, with the goal of making automated ECG interpretation more transparent to clinicians. She now works as a Project Engineer at IIT Madras’s Healthcare Technology Innovation Center. She develops computer-vision algorithms for image-guided robotic surgery, to track the motion of surgical tools with sub-millimetre accuracy. Working with surgeons and seeing how these systems behave in the operating room has shaped how she thinks about reliability and safety in algorithm design. Outside research, she volunteers with ACM India’s CS Pathshala Programme, teaching computational thinking in Tamil at government schools in Chennai.

Best Graduate Student
